France’s ambassador announced the country is interested in investing in Morocco’s renewable energy sector, including an upcoming second round of tenders for a solar station. The statement was made during the third edition of the Attijariwafa Bank Economic Conference, according to All Africa.
Currently, France is Morocco’s leading overall economic partner with trade between the two countries totaling about $10.26 billion, the article stated
French president Francois Hollande has planned a visit to Morocco in early April during which he plans to address business between France and Morocco.
“If our companies are already well represented in the wind power space, we want to get more involved in the Moroccan solar projects,” said French Ambassador Charles Fries.
The ambassador hopes his country can win a spot in the second round of bidding for the Ouarzazate solar station, All Africa said.
If France can secure a deal on the solar energy project with Morocco, it hopes to increase its involvement in strategic sectors like wind and other renewable energies in Morocco.
French energy company GDF Suez announced in February it would build and manage the biggest wind power station in Africa. Located in Tarfaya, Morocco, the plant is expected to begin energy production by the end of 2014.
