Algiers  –  The five Maghreb states voiced determination to rise to security challenges in the Maghreb region in addressing threats looming on the region, while opening on to their immediate neighbourhood, in particular the Sahel and the Sahara.

The foreign ministers of the Arab Maghreb Union (UMA) countries, who met Monday in the Algerian capital, examined the threats and dangers to security in the Maghreb region and agreed that terrorism and organized crime, including drug, arms and human trafficking, illegal immigration, armed criminal groups, financing of terrorism in all its forms and the phenomenon of money laundering, are all threats to security in the Maghreb and its African and Mediterranean environment.

To address this situation, the Maghreb Ministerial Council stressed the need for the Maghreb countries to endeavour to tackle these dangers. It emphasized the need to intensify efforts in a spirit of shared responsibility both at bilateral level and at the Maghreb, regional and international levels, taking into account the international commitments of each Maghreb country.

In this regard, the Council decided to hold in Morocco a meeting of AMU interior ministers on security issues, in preparation for the upcoming Maghreb summit scheduled late this year in Tunis.
