The European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs committee rejected, Monday in Brussels, an amendment on Western Sahara submitted by the Greens–European Free Alliance, a political group in the European Parliament containing green, regionalist and left-wing nationalist political parties.

The Greens group wanted to amend the Neighborhood, Development and International Cooperation Instrument, examined currently by the EU Foreign Affairs Committee.

In their amendment, the Greens wanted to add a precision to the Instrument in question, considering Western Sahara as a «non-self-governing territory».

For the record, Morocco is one of the main beneficiaries of the European Neighborhood Policy (ENP), which aims to strengthen prosperity, stability and security in the Union’s neighboring countries based on common values such as democracy, good governance, market economy principles and sustainable development.
