On 18 October, the European Union’s Judicial Cooperation Unit (Eurojust) welcomed the appointment of contact points in the Southern neighbouring states of EU: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, and Tunisia.
According to the press release, on 4 and 5 October the “Strategic Seminar of Judicial cooperation in criminal matters between the Member States and southern neighbours of the EU” in Cyprus, brought together experts from all the representing nations, European Commission and Frontex.
Michèle Coninsx, President of Eurojust underlined the importance of the gathering, informing the participants off the most significant mutual crimes type: “drug trafficking; terrorism (and related activities or offences); participation in criminal organisations, money laundering and fraud.”
Eurojust, highlighted the importance of the established EU contact points in some of the neighbouring countries and welcomed the extend use of the units in all the southern region.
Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus Petros Clerides, stressed the importance of the meeting in order to foster the relations between Maghreb and Europe. “Today’s organised crime doesn’t meet any boundaries. Criminal organisations cooperate in global and local level. They don’t care about ethnicity, religion or political stand…in order to achieve an efficient battle against crime we need to improve this judicial collaboration in regional as well as international level.”
Overall, during the Seminar, representatives discussed about: the practical aspects of judicial cooperation between Member States and southern neighbours on Extradition; Mutual legal assistance; Transfer of criminal proceedings; Transfer of sentenced persons, and on best practices and further steps.
