EU to push for better fisheries management

By Anne Eckstein | Friday 11 May 2012

The European Commission is set to call for better management of fisheries in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea at a meeting of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) in Marrakesh, Morocco, on 14-19 May. The agenda includes the evaluation of the work in the Black Sea, as well as an inventory of the management and conservation of fisheries, and the assessment of cooperation with other international partner organisations.

The EU will present proposals on: conservation and management measures for red coral, sharks and cetaceans, in line with the scientific advice of the GFCM Advisory Committee; minimum standards for fisheries management in the Black Sea and guidelines for an improved decision making framework. Scientific information on multiannual management plans will also be presented.

The Commission hopes that close coordination and cooperation with non-EU partners will lead to the adoption of joint measures to improve the sustainability of fishing activities and preserve the environmental richness of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

The GFCM will also evaluate the role of the task force, created in 2011, in order to modernise its institutional and legal framework. A special meeting, on 11-12 May, will be dedicated to the assessment of the work of the task force so far.

The GFCM is a regional fisheries management organisation for the Mediterranean and the Black Sea, and connecting waters. It has 24 members, including the EU and nine of its member states (Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Romania, Slovenia and Spain), as well as Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Japan, Russia, Georgia and Ukraine are observers.
