The European Union (EU) continues to support the Moroccan civil society in its efforts to strengthen democracy and respect for human rights, said on Wednesday in Casablanca EU ambassador to Morocco Eneko Landaburu.

Speaking on the occasion of his visit to the Moroccan Observatory of Prisons (OMP), Landaburu said the EU has always been attentive to the NGOs in Morocco, hailing “the militant spirit” of the Observatory members who spare no effort to ensure respect for human rights in general and that of prisoners in particular.

The diplomat also highlighted the project of “Initiative for the protection of prisoners’ rights and improve conditions of detention”, an OMP project funded by the EU for 3 million dirhams.

This project is part of the “European Initiative for Democracy” program, which aims particularly at promoting respect for the dignity of the prisoner and his rights in accordance with international human rights of prisoners, he said.

For his part, Vice President of the Observatory, Abderrahim Jamai, praised the cooperation between the EU and the OMP regarding this project, adding that it also seeks to create spaces for reflection and dialogue and strengthen the capacity of civil society actors in the actions of monitoring in order to contribute to respecting the prisoners’ rights.
