The European Union (EU) and Morocco have started consultations aimed at making the North African country play a key role in efforts to stabilize the Sahel-Sahara region, according to an EU official communique release here Monday.

It said the EU Envoy to the Sahel, Michel Reveyrand-de-Menthon, is currently engaged in talks with Moroccan authorities in a move to study regional and international responses to the crisis in the Sahel, given the potential contribution of Morocco to restore peace and stability in that region.

Reveyrand-de-Menthon, a former French Ambassador to Mali, was named EU Envoy to Sahel in April.
