This according to the Commissioner, Dacian Ciolos, during a recent press conference, when questioned about Spanish producers’ concerns over the new agricultural agreement with Morocco and the import of fruits and vegetables from that country.
Ciolos was accompanied by the minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, after a meeting with the representatives of Spanish farmers that refuse the new agricultural agreement with Rabat, pending the ratification by the European Parliament. On the other hand, the sector denounces the failure of Morocco to fulfil the tomato import quota, a complaint that the Spanish government delivered in January to the European Commission.
According to the commissioner, when the European Commission negotiated this protocol, they achieved something for the sector, consisting of the entrance price being maintained on tax of horticultural imports from Morocco. But Ciolos recognizes that the entrance price mechanism wasn’t effective and that within the CAP reform negotiations there will be proposals to improve its calculation and make it more effective.
