Rabat  –  The European Union (EU) granted Morocco, Tuesday in Rabat, a donation of over 497 million dirhams to finance the programme to support the implementation of the government plan for gender equality.

The programme aims to improve conditions of the promotion of gender equality and equity, ensure better legal protection for women and enhance their representation in decision-making.

It also aims at developping sectoral policies and programmes that contribute to gender equality.

The donation agreement was signed by the Ambassador of the European Union to Morocco, Eneko Landaburu, Moroccan Minister of Economy and Finance, Nizar Baraka, and Minister of Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development, Bassima Hakkaoui.

Mr. Baraka said that the programme was drawn up in “extensive discussions between the parties concerned and in harmony with the universal values”, adding that the donation “attests to the intensity of relations between Morocco to the EU” and reflects the EU’s interest in development efforts.

For her part, Mrs. Hakkaoui said that government plan aims to achieve gender equality that is “consistent with the civilizational and family values of Moroccan society.”

And Landaburu said: “we are taking an important step in strengthening relations between Morocco and the EU.”

He described as “successful” the partnership between the Kingdom and the Union, especially in such a priority sector as gender equality.
