Madrid   –  Spanish Ministry of the Environment, Rural and Marine Affairs disapproved, on Wednesday, the European Parliament’s vote against the extension of the EU-Morocco fisheries agreement, saying, however, that it respects the decision.

In a statement, the Ministry reiterated its support and commitment regarding the Spanish fleet, which is active in Moroccan waters, noting that it is expecting a notification from the European Commission explaining the implementation terms of the resolution, adopted by the EP.

The European Parliament rejected the extension of the agreement by 326 votes against 296 in favor and 58 abstentions.

The European lawmakers’ decision has also angered the Spanish shipowners, notably those affiliated to the Spanish Confederation of Fisheries (CEPESCA) and the Andalusian Federation of Fisheries Associations (FAAP), which strongly denounced the resolution that is detrimental to the interests of the fisheries sector in Spain.
