Enel Green Power SpA was the lowest bidder in a tender to build five wind farms totaling 850 megawatts in Morocco, according to a person with knowledge of the matter.
There were as many as five other bidders for the project, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the auction was private. Morocco, the only North African country without significant fossil fuel deposits, plans to install 2 gigawatts of clean power by 2020.
The renewables arm of Italy’s largest utility Enel SpA has said it’s interested in developing energy projects across Africa and is already working on solar and wind plants in South Africa. It’s working on a minigrid project in Kenya.
Three phone calls to Morocco’s National Office of Electricity and Potable Water, which organized the tender, weren’t answered. The five wind farms will be commissioned from 2017 to 2020, according to the office’s website.
