LONDON (Alliance News) – Potash development company Emmerson PLC on Tuesday said it has begun an environmental & social impact assessment baseline study for its Khemisset potash project in northern Morocco.

The baseline study is a key part in delivering the environmental & social impact assessment to the Ministry of Mines and allowing Emmerson to obtain a mining licence for Khemisset. A Morocco-based firm, Phenixa Sarl, has been appointed to manage the study and produce the framework for the assessment.

“Commencing the environmental baseline studies represents a further development milestone at the Khemmiset project. The [assessment] will be the key document underpinning our application for a Mining Licence for the Khemisset project. We are using local consultants with extensive in country experience, having been involved in some of the largest projects in Morocco,” said Emmerson Chief Executive Hayden Locke.

“The outstanding results of the scoping study for Khemisset confirmed that Emmerson controls a potentially world-class development stage potash asset and has provided us with the confidence to commence the [environmental & social impact assessment] process now to ensure our accelerated development timeline remains achievable,” Locke added.

Shares in Emmerson were up 1.1% at 2.88 pence on Tuesday.
