Combination of PV and concentrating solar power with storage will boost 800MW plant’s flexibility, says winning consortium.
France’s EDF and Abu Dhabi’s Masdar won a tender for an 800MW power project in Morocco with a bid combining PV and concentrating solar power (CSP).
EDF Renewables, Masdar and local power group Green Africa will build the Noor Midelt I project in central Morocco after winning a competitive process run by the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy (MASEN), said a statement. “The hybridisation of these technologies is a world first,” they claimed.
Combining PV and CSP, and linking them with energy storage, “increases the plant’s output to produce a flexible, dispatchable and competitive electricity for the Moroccan grid until five hours after sunset”, they added.
The project is expected to begin delivering power to the grid in 2022.
