Demonstrators in Morocco demand action to assist the stranded seafarers
Members of the ITF-affiliated Union Marocaine du Travail, are taking action across a number of Moroccan ports on 11 May in solidarity with the seafarers who have been stranded in Sète, France, and Algeciras and Tarifa in Spain, as well as in Moroccan ports such as Tangier and Nador. The ships they were working on were owned by Moroccan ferry company Comarit-Comanav, which has effectively ceased trading; the vessels were arrested in France and Spain reportedly because the company had failed to settle outstanding bills.Dockers are taking solidarity strike action in support of Moroccan seafarers who have been stranded in French, Spanish and Moroccan ports since December last year.
The dockers claim that the Moroccan authorities have failed to resolve the plight of the seafarers despite negotiations and requests for intervention. Their living conditions are poor and they have yet to receive all wages owed to them.
This latest action follows a recent demonstration by Comarit-Comanav seafarers and staff.
ITF dockers’ section secretary Frank Leys commented: “This is a great example of dockers working together with seafarers – who have been left abandoned and unpaid. This action will further highlight the dire need for immediate action by the government.”
