HM King Mohammed VI and Senegalese president, Macky Sall, dedicated on Monday in Camberene, Dakar suburb, two medical projects geared to the promotion of health services and the improvement of the Senegalese population’s access to medicine.
The two heads of state dedicated the Mohammed VI ophthalmologic clinic and a medicine production plant “West Afric Pharma”, a branch of the Moroccan lab SOTHEMA Maroc. These two projects confirm Morocco’s African calling and his steadfast commitment for sound, active and solidarity-based south-south cooperation.
These projects also illustrate HM the King’s will to contribute to the progress and prosperity of the Senegalese people, establish strategic and multiform strategic partnership between the two countries, and mobilize all potentials to achieve the objectives of reaching sustained development and fighting against social precariousness and exclusion.
The Mohammed VI ophthalmologic clinic, a project carried out by the Alawit foundation for human and sustained development under the instructions of HM King Mohammed VI, will give a strong impetus to the fight against blindness in Senegal.
Equipped with state-of-the-art machinery, the new clinic comprises three examination and diagnosis rooms, three surgery wards, a sterilization pole, conventional and outpatient hospitalization services, a training platform for West African practitioners and a conference room to host post-university training sessions and specialized conferences on ophthalmology.
The medical facility will extend cataract treatment services and will host surgeries for heavier diseases like glaucoma or retinal detachment, which is a première for this African region.
The clinic will have a capacity of up to 50,000 examinations annually and will also serve as an appropriate space for holding medical campaigns by Moroccan physicians for the local needy population, in addition to the clinic permanent humanitarian activities. These campaigns will help perform more than 2,500 cataract surgeries annually and over 150 retina surgeries.
The “West Afric Pharma” medicine plant will help supply generic medicine not only to Senegal but to all countries of the Economic and Monetary community of West Africa and those of the Economic community of West African states (ECOWAS)
An investment of 8 million Euros was required for this plant which extends over 2 hectares. It will also participate in developing pharmaceutical industrial activity in Senegal through the transfer of technology and know-how by the Sothema-Maroc laboratories.
The plant comprises an administrative building, a warehouse for raw materials and finished products, a quality-check lab, a manufacturing plant of dry forms and a zone for the manufacturing of liquid forms.
These two projects showcase the secular friendship and brotherhood ties binding the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of Senegal.
The dedication ceremony took place in the presence of Senegal’s Prime Minister, Abdoul Mbaye, Senegalese minister of health and social action, Eva Marie Coll Seck, members of the official delegation accompanying the sovereign, members of the Alawit foundation for human and sustained development and several other figures.
