LOCAL businesses are growing in confidence on the back of strong Christmas sales.
The majority of traders who spoke to the East Torrens Messenger last week said the Christmas trade was equal to or better than last year.
Inside Morocco worker Tiffany Creal said Christmas trade at the Moroccan homewares and interiors shop was up by about 10 per cent compared with the same period in 2010.
She credited the opening of several new shops in the area for the good performance. “There are more shops open, which has created more of an interest on Magill Rd,” Ms Creal said.
Tony Spriggs, who owns Pedlars Antique Market on Magill Rd, said his sales were up by about 20 per cent. “Even post Christmas sales have been up,” Mr Spriggs said.
“People have become more interested since we started auctions and have been getting in new stock.”
On The Parade, Aqua Boutique owner Trisha Huppatz said the festive season was busy before and after Christmas.
“We had a fabulous pre-season Christmas trade and post-Christmas sales are up on last year,” Ms Huppatz said.
Birdcage manager Jessica Page said her fashion boutique on The Parade had been tracking upwards in the past month.
“It was so busy it was crazy town and you couldn’t even move in the shop,” Ms Page said. “More people were buying.”
Powerhouse Sports owner Sue Wightman said most local traders she had spoken to had solid Christmas sales.
Trak Cycles manager Mello Bouwmeester said there was good consumer confidence compared with last year.
He expected the growing confidence to continue into 2012.
