Chariot Oil & Gas has made another splash in Morocco’s offshore scene by snapping up another exploration block.
The London-listed junior has gained a 75% slice in and operatorship of the Rabat Deep licence 50 kilometres off the North African country’s coast.

National oil company Onhym will retain the remaining 25%.

The block is adjacent to Chariot’s Loukos and Casablanca/Safi licences of which it also acquired 75% and operatorship earlier this month.

The Rabat Deep block comprises 10,782 km sq meaning Chariot’s total acreage offshore Morocco will be 16,207 km sq.

The company will in an initial three-year period reprocess some existing 2D seismic and carry out 1000 km sq of new 2D seismic.

Depending on the results it may then carry out 3D seismic before moving onto exploratory drilling.

Water depths at Rabat Deep range between 150 metres and 3500 metres.

Chariot said on Thursday: “Plays have been identified both in this carbonate platform as well as in Cretaceous sandstones overlying the salt.

“Charge is thought to be most likely from Jurassic source rocks but Paleozoic and Cretaceous source rock levels may also be present.”
