Canada-Morocco / Baird Welcomes Moroccan Counterpart
OTTAWA, Canada, June 4, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today met withSaad Dine El Otmani, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, to discuss Canada-Morocco relations and recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa.
“This year marks 50 years of bilateral relations betweenCanada and Morocco,” said Baird. “It affords us a special opportunity to celebrate the dynamic, crosscutting and successful relationship between our two countries.
“Both Canada and Morocco are committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Syria, and to ensuring stability and building democracy in the broader region.
“Morocco remains a strong partner in dealing with the volatile situation in Mali. Our countries continue to press for solutions to the grave problems affecting Mali, not least of which is the incursion of terrorists in the country’s north.”
Last month, Canada and Morocco signed a memorandum of understanding paving the way for greater cooperation in the agricultural sector. Canada and Morocco are also negotiating a bilateral free trade agreement to expand commercial relations between Canada and Morocco. This would beCanada’s first free trade agreement with an African country.
