Ottawa – Canada and Morocco are two democratic countries, Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Jason Kenney said on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Kenney, who was speaking at an evening organized by the Moroccan embassy in Ottawa under the patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, said that Morocco is one of the oldest partners of Canada, underlining the political, cultural and commercial ties uniting the two countries, considering the many agreements linking them, the important Moroccan population living in Canada and the Kingdom’s dialogue and openness policy internationally.
Kenney also acknowledged Morocco’s political stability and social cohesion. He said that the 140,000-strong Moroccan community in Canada plays a role in deepening friendship between the two countries.
The federal minister recalled the exchange of visits between the two countries’ senior officials, notably the official visit by Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in January 2001, to launch the Canadian-Moroccan negotiations on the free-trade agreement.
The event was attended by Morocco’s Ambassador to Canada Nouzha Chekrouni, and minister of Trade, Industry and New Technologies Abdelkader Amara.
