A squad of six British triathletes is in action this weekend at the 2012 Larache ITU Sprint Triathlon African Cup on Saturday 7 April.
Mark Buckingham, a member of the British Triathlon Olympic Foundation Squad will make the journey to North Africa having recently been crowned British Elite Duathlon Champion for the second successive year and has delivered two top-ten performances in ITU Triathlon Premium Pan American Cup races so far this season.
A fellow graduate of the trigold programme, Adam Bowden, joins Mark on the start line. The former steeplechaser has had an impressive start to the season delivering two top-five performances already this year. Adam is looking forward to continuing that form commenting: “I am looking forward to racing again. A sprint distance race is always a good race to do in preparation for the Europeans. I feel I have made really good progress in training since my last race outings..”
Adam is joined by fellow Loughborough based British Triathlon Olympic Academy squad triathlete, Aaron Harris. Aaron has also been in good early season form delivering two top-ten performances in Peru and Florida. Along with Mark and Adam, Aaron has recently been selected to represent the GE Great Britain Triathlon Team at the 2012 Eilat ETU Triathlon European Championships. David Bishop who is also based Loughborough completes the British men’s line-up in Morocco.
In the women’s race, another member of the British Triathlon Olympic Academy squad, Lucy Hall will be on the start line having also been selected to race for Eilat last month. Lucy has already stood on the podium twice this season, winning her first ITU race at the Salinas ITU Triathlon Premium Pan American Cup in Ecuador last month.
The event will be a good opportunity to race, as Lucy adds: “This race hasn’t been a specific target for me, but I am going into it aiming to be the best I can be. It was great to be selected for Eilat, and this will be a good opportunity to get some race action in before the Europeans.”
Lucy will be joined on the start line by Loughborough University triathlete, Lucy Smith who finished in the top-15 in the British Elite Duathlon Championships two weeks ago.
