Brass, glass and Tangiers tagines – Moroccan market has the goods
The sights and sounds of the kasbah can be sampled on a city street.
The market, in Humberstone Gate, features 40 Berber tents selling Moroccan handicrafts and goods including tagines, tea glasses, decorative brass and metalwork, leather goods, herbs and spices.
Trader Mouhssine Bensaih, 34, said: “This is our second time in Leicester. Everyone is interested in having a look at what we’ve got for sale.”
Curtain and rug salesman Abdelmajid Ait Aal, 46, of Marrakech, said: “People are coming in to have a look today.
“We have lots of lovely hand-made items to sell and there is plenty of colour and smiles.”
Peter Clay, 70, of Aylestone, Leicester, said: “At first I thought I was in Tangiers. The throws and the large lamps caught my eye.
“You’ve got to haggle with the salesmen – it’s their way of life.”
Jade Garside, 22, of Coalville, said: “It’s nice to see a different culture and a lot of the things for sale are hand-made.”
There will also be a band playing North African gnawa music and freshly prepared Moroccan food at the market, which runs until Saturday.
It is open from 9am until 5pm each day.
