The Christie Administration announced the selection of New Jersey’s 21 County Teachers of the Year and the State Facility Teacher the Year for the 2012-13 school year and the Essex County representative teaches at Bloomfield Tech.
Indira Bailey, a teacher at Bloomfield Tech, is the Essex County teacher chosen among the 21 others in New Jersey. Bailey received a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, New York and a M.A. in Educational Leadership and Supervision from Kean University. She received two Fulbright-Hayes Fellowships to South Africa and Morocco and a Fulbright Memorial Scholarship to Japan. She has been teaching Commercial Illustration at Essex County Vocation Schools/Bloomfield Campus for 12 years. She started the district’s first National Art Honor Society.
“Most of us know how humbling and awe-inspiring it is to be a student or a colleague of an excellent teacher – these are the individuals who have the power and skill to change lives and bring out the best in us all. I’d like to congratulate the twenty two teachers on their selection,” Education Commissioner Chris Cerf said. “Through our teacher of the year selection process, which begins at the school and district levels, many more teachers are recognized and celebrated for the outstanding jobs they are doing for our children.”
County teachers of the year are selected at the county level by panels representing a cross-section of administrators, teachers, parents and county education association representatives convened by the executive county superintendents of schools.
Each County Teacher of the Year submits a written application and a 15 minute video to the Department of Education for review by a state-level panel of educators who make the final selection of the 2012-13 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year. The announcement will be made at the October meeting of the State Board of Education and the winner will represent the state at the National Teacher of the Year competition.
