Belgium Closely Follows 'Democratic Evolution' In Morocco, Belgian FM Says

Rabat – Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders said that his country closely follows Morocco’s democratic evolution, and economic and social development.

“Belgium and the EU closely follow Morocco’s democratic evolution, through the new constitution, as well as its economic and social development,” Reynders told the press, on Wednesday in Rabat, after a meeting with Moroccan counterpart Saad Dine El Otmani.

He said he is delighted at the growing collaboration between the Union, Morocco and the countries south of the Mediterranean.

“We will work to optimize Morocco’s advanced status (..). I hope that we start working on it by the end of the year through a high joint committee,” he noted.

The Belgian official said that the meeting touched on means and ways to foster partnership ties in the light of the “good relations” between Morocco and Belgium.

Internationally, the two parties tackled the situation in Syria and reaffirmed their support for the UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan. They also urged the international community, notably China and Russia, to pressure Syria into halting violence.

El Otmani highlighted the importance of this visit which falls within the framework of strengthening long-standing bilateral relations.
