Morocco is famed as the home to the ‘hammam’ but finding one with all the comforts of a European spa is not easy; enter Rebali on the Atlantic coast, located 20 minutes south of Essaouira in the village of Sidi Kaouki.
The Rebali Riad complex – which combines the exclusivity and privacy of a villa with the service and intimacy of a boutique hotel – has its own private, marble-lined hammam, which offers a variety of treatments including a 1 hour hammam scrub for £35 – an all-over scrub and cleanse in the steam room, which is the traditional way of cleaning in Muslim countries and guarantees to make you feel a new man or woman.
There is a room to relax in and guests are recommended to wear the towelling robe provided because the treatment leaves you skin pores wide open and you can still feel cold despite the 30 degrees heat outside.
Other spa treatment are also available and there are many other activities to choose from including a half-day camel trek with a Moroccan picnic, tennis lessons, cooking lessons, surfing lessons (kite, wind or board) and yoga sessions.
The Rebali boutique hotel complex is comprised of six individual properties which have from 2-6 bedrooms and are fully-serviced by onsite staff including cooks who can prepare delicious Moroccan meals and deliver them to the riads for a small supplement.
The smaller riads can be hired in their entirety by groups or families, whilst couples can book by the room in the larger properties. There are communal swimming pools and private ones for the larger riads.
A week’s stay in October or November costs from £270 pp (two sharing) on a B&B basis including 2 x one-hour treatments in the hammam. Fully-bonded for financial peace of mind, Fleewinter can book flights and private transfers on request.
