Saudi environmentalist Dr. Majeda Muhammad Aburas was among the four top winners of the Arab Women’s Leadership Environmental Award for 2011.
Others were Sheikha Amthal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of Kuwait, Dr. Ameena Khadra of Morocco and Dr. Nadia Obaid of Egypt.
Arab League Secretary-General Dr. Nabeel Al-Arabi officiated a ceremony that was held at the organization’s headquarters in Cairo recently to honor the four laureates who were selected from 25 outstanding women personalities in the Arab world.
Dr. Muhammad Al-Johani, vice president of the Euro-Arab Organization for Environment, said the four women were given the award in appreciation of their contributions toward environment protection.
“We have already started receiving nominations for the 2012 Award,” Al-Johani said, adding the prize was aimed at encouraging Arab women to play a leadership role in environment protection and achieving sustainable development.
“The award seeks to encourage Arab women leaders to work for environmental protection and make use of their expertise for sustainable development,” Al-Johani said. “This will have a positive impact on Arab countries.”
The award also aims at achieving global excellence and promoting a culture of environmental voluntarism,” the vice president said.
The Euro-Arab Organization for Environment instituted the award to encourage women leaders engaged in environmental, scientific research to exert more efforts in finding proper solutions to preserve the environment and natural resources.
