The Arab League on Wednesday gave Syria three days to end what it termed the “bloody repression” and accept the protocols presented at the beginning of November or face severe economic sanctions. Representatives of Arab nations meeting in Rabat, Morocco, said they were “fed up” with the Syrian president’s siege. Qatar’s prime minister told reporters that, “we are almost at the end of the line.” But the ministers stressed that the resolution must come without any foreign intervention and offered to send a team of monitors to Syria to determine whether it is complying with the League’s demands. With former soldiers now taking up weapons against the forces loyal to Bashar Al-Asad, the level of violence is rapidly escalating. In Washington, a State Department spokesman warned that the anti-Asad bloodshed could be playing into the president’s hands. Pro-Asad demonstrators continued to attack the Damascus embassies of Arab League member states that supported the suspension of Syria. The embassies of Morocco and the UAE were the latest to be hit.
