Ministers from North and West African countries, and authorities from the United Nations and international security organizations have gathered in Morocco, for a conference to discuss border-control cooperation and security threats in the Sahel.
There have been calls for cross-border exchange of intelligence and information. Niger wants to strengthen cooperation to combat militant threats and prevent destabilization of the region. The conference will last three days. Instability in the area has grown recently, with a number of kidnappings of Westerners, especially after France’s military operation in northern Mali. The main threat in the region is said to come from the North African militant group known as al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.
