Algiers – Minister of Solidarity, Women, Family and Social Development Bassima Hakkaoui highlighted, on Wednesday in Algiers, the Moroccan experience in relation with women’s empowerment and surveyed the achievements made by the Kingdom in this field.
In a speech at the opening of the 5th session of the high council of the Arab Women Organization (AWO), the Minister said that the family law (Moudawana) is among the most important accomplishment by Morocco since it brings about a new concept of equality and provides protection for women against injustice and abuses, noting that the new constitution advocates justice and equality.
She stressed the role played by the AWO and called for closing ranks and reinforcing the body’s status at the international level.
Concerning Morocco’s proposal of a candidate for the position of the AWO’s director general, she said that “this matter will be submitted to HM the King and HRH Lalla Salma, member of the body’s high council.”
The 5th session of the AWO’s high council focused on the implementation of the 2008-2012 plan for the promotion of women’s role through different projects carried out by member states.
The Arab Women Organization is an intergovernmental organization established under the umbrella of the League of Arab States.
