Al-Qaida in Algeria says dozens killed in 4 months
ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) — North Africa’s branch of al-Qaida has issued a list of 58 operations carried out in Algeria over four months that it says killed dozens.
The announcement has appeared on online extremist forums and details 58 operations between Nov. 26 and May 2.
The statement, which was published Monday by the SITE Monitoring Service, included bomb attacks and ambushes killing at least 53 soldiers and police, injuring dozens.
While Algeria’s civil war between Islamists and security forces has subsided since its hey day in the 1990s, scattered attacks continue.
The operations occur in the country’s mountainous Kabyle region around 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of the capital. The rest of the country is peaceful.
Al-Qaida in North Africa also operates in the desert to the south, including Mali, Niger and Mauritania.
