The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment(Magrama) decided to extend for six months the aid to fishermen affected by the cancellation of the fisheries agreement between the European Union (EU) and Morocco.

The aid will cover from 15 June to 14 December 2012.

All vessels and crew members that had been selected in the previous notification as recipients of government assistance will be able to be eligible to be granted this benefit without filing in a new application.

This time, the amounts considered to finance the aid are equal to those of the current stoppage.

The Ministry noted that this extension had been considered in the previous notification, which mentioned the possibility of processing a new order of support for the temporary cessation of the fleet if, within six months of the temporary stoppage, the same situation and conditions persist.

With regard to financing, the ship owners will account for about EUR 3.5 million and the 647 crew members will be granted approximately EUR 5.3 million.

There is the possibility of interrupting the shutdown, if the fishing activity is restarted under the new bilateral fisheries agreement.

A delegation of officials from the European Commission (EC) travelled to Rabat this week to advance the negotiation of a new protocol with Morocco.
