The new Agricultural Protocol within the Partnership Agreement between the EU and Morocco will enter into force on July 1.

The new legislation will then be already effective when the next export campaign of tomatoes begins, next October. According to Spain, this product will actually be one of the most affected by the improved condition for Moroccan fruit and vegetable exports within the new agricultural agreement.

In their meeting in Paris on March 28 (see past news), tomato growers of France, Italy and Spain decided to write a document with their main demands facing the implementation of this Protocol. They rivindicate the need to reform the system of entry prices to be effective, so that imports from Morocco pay the corresponding duties. The paper, which will be delivered to the resepctive governments and to the European Commission officials, will also require the establishment of a unique formula to control and quantify the amount of tomatoes that come through the European borders.

Meanwhile Morocco is already experiencing aremarkable export season for tomatoes, which amounted 297,320 tons in early March compared to 259,170 tons in the same period 2011.
