Industry minister says ‘340 million pieces made since March’

Morocco Industry Minister Moulay Hafid Elalmy said on Thursday that Morocco produces 16 million anti-Covid masks per day and the country has produced a total of 340 million masks since the start of the pandemic in March.

Elalmy’s comments came on the sidelines of a session in the Moroccan Parliament dedicated to the coronavirus, from Covid-19 defence strategies to repercussions of the pandemic on the country’s industrial system. The minister said 93% of workers in the industrial sector got their jobs back in July, with the highest reentry percentages in the pharmaceutical and automotive industries, 100% and 97%, respectively.

“The objectives set for the year 2020 were therefore reached, in particular in terms of job creation, with more than 505,000 jobs,” Elalmy said. With regard to products tied to the Covid-19 emergency, the minister said “the only company specialised in ethyl alcohol produces 240 hectolitres per day of the essential disinfectant”.
