The National staff – The UAE’s Khalifa Al Qubaisi lost to Alaa Bassou of Morocco in the bronze-medal match of the 73kg men’s judo competition yesterday at the Arab Games in Qatar.
The result meant that Al Qubaisi was classified joint fifth in the final standings. The gold medal was won by Egypt’s Hussein Hafeez.
Also yesterday in Doha, the UAE’s women’s shooting team won a bronze medal in the 10-metre air pistol competition, and just missed the medal stand with a fourth-place finish in 10-metre air rifle event.
In individual 10m air rifle competition, Afra Albadi of the UAE finished fifth, Asma Alnuaimi was 11th and Shamsain Al Marzouqi was 14th. In the 10m air pistol, Sumaya Al Meshaiei was fourth, Wafa Alali was 12th and Shaikha Al Rumaithi was 16th.
The UAE men’s bowling team was led by Shaker Al Hassa, who finished seventh in the individual competition. Mahmood Al Atter was eighth, Al Swaidi was ninth, Nayef Eqab was 13th, Sayed Al Hashemi was 14th and Jamal Ali was 32nd.
In billiards, Amin Fikree of the UAE scored a 7-2 second-round victory over Adnane Hizam of Morocco, while Abdulla Al Hosani lost to Ayhab Nisuif of Iraq.
In men’s chess, AR Saleh Salem won his first two games to get off to a good start.
In the women’s competition, Kholoud Al Zarouni and Muna Al Harmoudi each had a win and a loss.
