The Kingdom of Morocco is among the top five countries in the 2019 ranking of the UN Human Rights Committee, which every year selects the countries that implemented UN recommendations regarding the protection of human rights.
Morocco, Denmark, Sweden, Argentina and Burkina Faso received this year “the highest rating (A) in the Committee’s follow-up review of their action on priority recommendations”, says a press release issued lately by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The five countries were awarded ‘A’s in recognition of the “significant steps” taken towards implementing the recommendations of the UN Human Rights Committee.
This Committee is a supervisory body of OHCHR, responsible for the International Covenant on civil and political rights and its optional protocols.
The Kingdom of Morocco has earned the highest grade for “the adoption of the law on the national mechanism for the prevention of torture”, designating the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) as its operational body, adds the UN Human rights committee.
This law entered into force on March 1, 2018, one month after it was unanimously adopted by both Chambers of the Moroccan Parliament.
By awarding Morocco this highest mark, the UN Human Rights Committee debunks the false allegations circulated by the Polisario Front and its Algerian sponsors on human rights violations in Morocco and particularly in its Sahara southern provinces.
