Rabat – The Justice and Development Party (PJD), which won Morocco’s legislative elections of November 25, said Saturday, it upholds “sustainable and more balanced relations” with the United States and the European Union.
Secretary General of the PJD, Abdelillah Benkirane, told the press, after the announcement of the partial results of the parliamentary elections, that his party will uphold Morocco’s longstanding relations with the US and the EU. “What we claim, today, is to work together, in a democratic way, within the framework of balanced ties.”
Benkirane also stressed the need for Morocco to further reinforce relations with Arab, African and Muslim countries.
According to preliminary figures, provided by the interior ministry on Saturday, the PJD won 80 seats of the 288 seats in which winners were announced.
Benkirane said that his party’s sweeping victory in the parliamentary elections puts it in front of a “heavy responsibility.”
Concerning the formation of the new government, Benkirane said it is premature to discuss coalitions before the announcement of the final results.
The PJD, he said, is ready to form coalitions with the parties of the democratic Koutla ( an alliance mustering the Independence Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces and the Progress and Socialism Party). The party remains open to other political parties, he said.
