London – The British government welcomes the “constructive role” played by Morocco in the process to settle the Sahara issue.
“Morocco has demonstrated its ability to play a constructive role in the region, and we encourage Morocco to continue its efforts, particularly with regard to the Sahara,” said on Wednesday Henry Bellingham, British Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, at the British parliament on the democratic progress in Morocco.
The British official also said that the kidnapping of European nationals from the Tindouf camps (Algeria’ south-west) is of “grave concern and it raises questions about the safety of those in the polisario-controlled camps”
The abduction broaches queries about “the threat posed by al-Qaeda in the Maghreb across the Sahel,” he pointed out.
“The incident also underlines the need to find a solution to secure the futures of the refugee population,” said Bellingham.
