Remittances from Moroccans abroad reached 1.7 billion U.S. dollars in the first quarter of 2018, up 13.4 percent from a year ago, the foreign exchange regulator said Friday.

The remittances, a main source of foreign exchange reserves in Morocco, came from more than 4.5 million Moroccan expatriates, it added.

However, foreign direct investment (FDI) in Morocco declined 10.8 percent to 542 million dollars in the same period, compared to 607 million dollars last year.

As the top FDI recipient in the Maghreb region, Morocco attracted nearly 2.57 billion FDI dollars in 2017, up 12 percent year-on-year.
