Morocco has been designated to host the 2021 annual meetings of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), local media reported on Wednesday.

The Moroccan financial daily L’Economiste said this designation came after a long process, which involved the evaluation of 13 countries’ bid.

The same source noted that this will be the first time an African country hosts the event since 1973.

The source said the choice of Morocco will mark the 60th anniversary of the country’s accession to both organizations, in 1958.

The Boards of Governors of the WB Group and the IMF hold meetings in autumn to discuss issues related to poverty reduction, international economic development and finance.

The annual meetings are traditionally held in Washington two years out of three and, in order to reflect the international character of the two institutions, every third year in a different member country.
