The Secretary General of Morocco’s National Agency for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, Sonia Mezzour has invited African countries to borrow a leaf from the Moroccan example regarding access to water and energy, to ensure an inclusive and sustainable development on the continent, especially in rural areas.
Speaking in the Moroccan city of Dakhla on Monday Ms. Mezzour declared: “We cannot talk about sustainable development when 600,000 people lack access to electricity and 35 percent or 1.2 billion inhabitants have no access to clean water and a sanitation system.”
She was taking part in a session as part of the second edition of the Crans Montana Forum running from March 17-22, 2016 in Dakhla, 1700 km from Rabat.
Mezzour recommended the establishment of infrastructure development projects, which could inspire and promote the integration of young people in the value chain of green technologies.
According to her, empowering and educating women is also the second major challenge facing Africa after full access to water and energy, since “Africa’s installed power capacity is equivalent to Spain’s 145 gigawatts,” Ms. Mezzour explained.
