The European Union (EU) has granted Morocco a €10 million grant to support the kingdom’s migration policy, reports said on Saturday. “This is just the first installment of the financial assistance aimed at supporting Morocco,” said Dimitris Avramopoulos , the European Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs.

“The EU attaches particular importance to Morocco migration strategy particularly in the fight against illegal immigration to Europe,” Avramopoulos added at the signing ceremony.

For his part, the Minister in charge of Moroccans Residing Abroad (MRE), Anis Birou requested more consistent financial support from EU.

“Morocco’s migration strategy is not only based on a security or administrative approach but on the aspects of social and professional integration of migrants who decided to settle permanently in Morocco,” he said.

He recalled that over 18,000 undocumented files were regularized under this migration strategy initiated in December 2014.

He stressed to the European Commissioner that MRE’s rights living in Europe be preserved.
