Rabat – Italy’s foreign ministry has strongly advised Italian nationals not to travel to South Algeria, especially to the Tindouf camps, because of insecurity prevailing there.
In a statement carried by its website, the ministry highlighted “a growing instability in the Sahel region, confirmed by kidnapping cases, over the past years, of western nationals, perpetrated by AQIM-linked groups.”
Following the kidnapping of two people, in February and October 2011, in the south of the Algerian city of Djanet and in the western area near Tindouf respectively, it is advised to avoid travelling to the Algerian territories bordering Mali, Niger, Libya and Mauritania, the statement said.
The ministry also recommended that non-essential trips to the Tindouf camps be cancelled.
