New York (United Nations) – Morocco was elected, on Friday, in the first round and with an overwhelming majority, a new non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term as of January 1st, 2012, following a vote of the 193 UN member states.
Morocco, which represents the group of African states, obtained 151 votes, that is more than the required two-thirds majority (129 votes), in this election by secret ballot.
This is the third term of the Kingdom in the UN Security Council, after serving in 1963-1964 and 1992-1993.
Shortly before the vote, Moroccan Foreign Minister, Taib Fassi Fihri, said he was “very confident” about the outcome of the vote.
“Morocco’s bid is in accordance with and in full respect for the principle of equitable geographical representation,” he told the press.
