Paris – Morocco’s minister of foreign affairs and cooperation Salaheddine Mezouar stressed that Morocco is playing an eminent role in the Sahel-Sahara region, and more broadly in Africa where Moroccans troops are taking part in peace-keeping missions in the Central African republic and in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“We are active on three fronts, he said, pointing out to security and personnel training in the Sahel countries, cultural and religious safety and development,” the minister told “Jeune Afrique” weekly.
He also underlined the personal involvement of HM King Mohammed VI in securing the safety of the Sahel region, insisting that actions meant to improve the daily life of populations are crucial as they eliminate factors on which terrorism thrive.
Mezouar also flatly denied Algeria’s accusations regarding human rights breaches in the Sahara, noting that “Morocco applies the same human rights standards in the north and in the South”.
Morocco respects the rule of law, undertaking reforms, which is not the case of Algeria, he went on, before stressing that it is up to Algeria to shoulder its responsibility to remedy the appalling situation of people living in Tindouf.
