Rabat – The National Squad of the Judicial Police arrested an individual suspected of planning the assassination of public figures and security officials, as well as bomb attacks against sensitive sites, a statement from the General Department of National Security said on Tuesday.
Products used in the manufacture of explosives were discovered in the suspect’s home in Casablanca.
“The suspect, who was active in the cyber jihadist in connection with the Al-Qaeda and pledged his allegiance to the emir of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, was planning the assassination of public figures and security officials, as well as bomb attacks against sensitive sites, according to the new orientation of this network that encourages individual jihadist acts, the statement said.
The suspect had forged close links with elements close to the Al-Qaeda, which have proven expertise in the manufacture of explosives, in order to benefit from their experience and follow their instructions for making explosives.
He was also in constant contact with leaders of “the Al-Qaeda organization in the Islamic Maghreb” (AQIM), which encouraged him to target certain vital interests in the Kingdom.
The suspect will be brought to justice after the completion of the investigation.
