Elected officials and civil society activists of the southern region of Laâyoune-Boujdour-Sakiat Al Hamra underlined on Saturday before a group of visiting foreign reporters their adherence to the Moroccan proposal to grant autonomy to the Sahara as a means to end the artificial conflict around the Moroccan Sahara.
During a meeting, held by the region’s wali, Khalil Dkhil, They stressed that the southern provinces inhabitants are attached to this plan as the only internationally-acclaimed realistic solution and as the only initiative likely to preserve the dignity, freedom and rights of local population.
They also recalled before the reporters the development projects conducted in these provinces, particularly in infrastructure, social development, health and education, insisting that the autonomy plan was designed in coordination with the local population, elected officials and civil society activists through the Royal consultative council of Saharan affairs.
They further denounced the serious human rights violations committed in the Tindouf camps, including torture, abuses and other acts forbidden by international charters.
The delegation of foreign reporters comprises six journalists from Great Britain, Canada and the USA in addition to the head of programs at the International Women’s Media Foundation, Nadine Hoffman.
