Madrid, Spain, April 10, 2013 – Youssef Amrani, Morocco’s Delegate-Minister of Foreign Affairs, has encouraged Spanish companies to duplicate their Latin American model which has had so much success.

During a meeting with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García Margallo, Amrani noted the success Spanish companies have had in recent years in Latin America and invited them to export this model to Morocco. “Spanish companies can duplicate their Latin American experience in Morocco”. He also noted that his country could serve as a “port of entry” for the Maghreb, Sahel and the Middle East. “There are opportunities to work together. We know the networks”, he said.

Amrani emphasised that Morocco has started down “an irreversible road toward modernity” and that conditions are opportune for Spanish companies that “have resources despite the crisis”. The Moroccan foreign policy diplomat confirmed that Morocco presents a wide range of business opportunities and believes that the Spanish economy is strong enough to invest abroad. He also stated that there is room for new initiatives in sectors such as construction, infrastructures, finance and agriculture.

Amrani also guaranteed the security of Spanish companies in a strict legal framework. He referenced the complaints of extortion and expropriation presented by Spanish businesses with a Moroccan presence. Amrani admitted that the abuses by the Moroccan authorities of Spanish companies with contracts in the country, which has led to complaints by the Association of Businesses Affected by Extortion in Morocco (AAEM), is “intolerable”.

“We cannot allow these things to happen while at the same time we are asking for foreign investment” he said. “There are some people who have taken advantage of the situation, but we are going to fight against it. If there is fraud, those responsible will be punished” he stated.
