The Euro Middle East Forum (EMEF) in Brussels is hosting a series on the Arab Spring entitled “Arab Transitions: Two Years On”, as part of an effort to provide young professionals from Europe and the Middle East with a platform for debating the recent political, economic and social developments in Arab countries.

EMEF events are typically attended by individuals working in government, public administration, business, media, NGOs, think tanks, and academia, according to the EMEF website. Participants share an interest in political, economic and social developments in Europe and the Middle East, a commitment to cooperation and debate, and an openness to innovative ideas.

The EMEF began this lecture series Tuesday with an address by Maher Hamoud, editor-in-chief of the Daily News Egypt.

Titled “The Revolution Continues”, the purpose of Hamoud’s lecture was to paint a picture of Egypt two years into its revolution and to address the role that the EU and the international community can play in helping Egypt to realize the ideals of the revolution.

In his speech, Hamoud discussed the military and their position in Egypt’s current balance of power, as well as the “Brotherhoodisation” of the state.

“I also spoke on the role that women played in the revolution and the violations that have occurred against them since the ousting of [former president Hosni] Mubarak,” Hamoud said.
