Morocco Mall in Casablanca was voted best global retail and leisure development during the Mapic Awards ceremony which took place in Cannes.

Presented by International Design, Morocco Mall opened to the public early this year and is the only destination mall in the Mediterranean and Africa. It provides 70,000m² of commercial space over three levels and its 350 stores bring together 600 brands. The mall is set in 14,000m² of landscaped gardens and offers 30,000m² of outdoor space. In March, Morocco Mall also won the Mipim Award for best shopping centre.

The Mapic award for the best global retail expansion went to department store group Debenhams in the UK, while The Star Vista in Singapore, submitted by Capital Malls Asia, won the award for most innovative shopping centre.

McDonald’s in France was voted as having the best multichannel retail strategy, a new category in the awards programme to reflect the growing importance of digital commerce.

This year, the category for best retail concept was split into two, one for fashion and footwear and another for food and beverages. The award for best fashion concept went to Adidas Neo in Germany, while the prize for best food and beverage concept when to Belgium’s Exki.

In total, the Mapic Awards programme comprised seven categories this year, two more than in 2011.
