Government sources in Morocco denied Thursday reports about the destruction of prehistoric engravings by Salafists in the High Atlas Mountains in the southern of the kingdom, Moroccan news agency MAP reported.

“Government sources have described as unfounded information the reports about the destruction by Salafists of stone carvings dating back to the prehistoric era in the region of the High Atlas,” said MAP.

Confirming information distributed by several media outlets including the Arabic-language As-Sabah newspaper, an official of the Amazigh Rights As-Sabah (LADH) Abubakr Anghir, told AFP Wednesday that “the more than 8,000 years old stone carvings representing the sun and located in the Toubkal region were destroyed a few days ago by the Salafists. ”
