Cairo – Meeting of the Arab Peace Follow-up Committee opened Monday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, with the participation of Moroccan Foreign Minister Taib Fassi Fihri.
The meeting, marked by the participation of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, is part of the efforts aiming to coordinate Arab positions before applying to the United Nations for a full-fledged Palestinian state.Abbas told the press, shortly before the meeting, that Palestine is determined to go to the UN in order to get recognition as full-fledged state, despite pressure from the United States in particular.
³We are determined to go to the UN Security Council for the recognition of the international community, despite the dangers and pitfalls that lie ahead of us, including threats to freeze annual aid estimated at $470 million,² he said.
In addition to Morocco, the Committee includes Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.
